This imaging test is ordered by the doctor to identify any issues with the airways, lungs, heart, bones, and blood vessels. It can also determine if there is any air or fluid around the lungs or fluid in the lungs.
X-Ray Basics
Prior to sending in the patient for a complete chest X-ray, the doctor requires details about the patient's medical history. He or she also requires information about when the discomfort started, for how long it persisted, and any other symptoms that may occur which have impacted the lifestyle of the patient. X-ray imaging is used with any identifiable clinical symptoms to diagnose the disease and chart treatment plans for the future.
Why do you need an X-Ray?
X-rays are quick and painless procedures. The doctor orders a chest x-ray if they think that the patient's symptoms are connected to problems in the chest. Discomfort in the chest or other symptoms like shortness of breath and seizures are linked to a range of conditions associated with the various organs present in the chest cavity.
Doctors may order the test to see the size and shape of the heart, as abnormalities with either can indicate issues with heart function. On the other hand, chest X-rays may also be used to monitor progress after surgery in the chest area. It is used to check if implants are in the right place and help ensure that there are no air leaks or build-up of fluid.
However, it must also be taken into account that the X-Ray is not the only way to help identify why the patient has pain in the chest or other symptoms. The doctor may also order other tests, like an ultrasound, to help with the diagnosis. The various imaging tests work together to reach a conclusive diagnosis.
What can you expect?
The X-Ray technician at the lab helps the patient settle in and directs them according to the requirements of the X-ray. This is a 4V X-ray.
The first position is PA, the posteroanterior view, which is the standard frontal chest view. This is performed while standing. The other is the AP, anteroposterior view, in which the beam traverses the patient from the anterior to the posterior – this is performed sitting up on the bed. The third is the lateral view; this is performed standing from the left lateral. The last is decubitus, where the patient is lying on the side.
In general, the patient is required to hold their breath and remain still while the image is being taken in order to ensure it's not blurry; otherwise, the procedure may have to be repeated. While the process is relatively short, it may take a longer time for the X-ray to come out if the patient has been injected with a dye to make the imaging come out clearer and detailed.
How do you need to prepare for the X-ray?
X-rays are standard procedures and do not require the patient to prepare beforehand. However, there are some things that must be kept in mind before going in for the imaging:
- ● No jewelry, glasses, and metallic objects should be worn, as they make the X-Rays harder to read.
- ● Consult your physician if you are pregnant, or there is a possibility of pregnancy; X-rays are usually avoided during this period.
- ● Inform your doctor beforehand if you wear any on-body devices such as an insulin pump or any metal implants in your body
When do you need to get it?
A chest X-ray is ordered when a patient displays signs and symptoms related to issues in the chest:

What do your X-ray results mean? What will happen now?
Typically, the X-ray results are available on the same day. They are reviewed by the doctor and radiologist, allowing them to determine how they should proceed. In accordance with the results, the doctor may also order additional imaging scans.
